Transcutaneous Doppler ultrasound measurement of superior mesenteric artery blood flow in man.

چکیده
A duplex scanner which consists of a real time two dimensional scanner and a pulsed Doppler flowmeter was used to measure superior mesenteric blood flow in 70 healthy subjects. By processing the Doppler shift signals, the instantaneous average Doppler shift frequency and then the instantaneous average velocity of the flow rate were calculated. Both diameter of the vessel and angle between vessel and beam were measured from real time imaging. The mean (+/- standard error of the mean) of the superior mesenteric blood flow was 517 +/- 19 ml/min. There was neither significant difference in flow between sexes, nor correlation between flow and age (r = 0.042). The mean of coefficients of variability were 6.8% over the short term, and 8.2% in long term studies.

Effects of exercise on mesenteric blood flow in man.
Transcutaneous Doppler ultrasound was used to assess the effects of exercise on both fasting and postprandial superior mesenteric artery blood flow. After treadmill exercise (speed 5 km/h, gradient 20%, duration 15 min) in 16 subjects, superior mesenteric artery blood flow decreased by 43% immediately after the end of the exercise and by 29% at five minutes and 24% at 10 minutes postexercise. T...
متن کاملFasting and post-prandial splanchnic blood flow is reduced by a somatostatin analogue (octreotide) in man.
1. The effects of the subcutaneous administration of a long-acting somatostatin analogue (octreotide) or of placebo on the splanchnic blood flow response to a mixed solid meal has been examined in eight normal subjects by using a transcutaneous Doppler ultrasound technique. Each subject was studied on two occasions more than 1 week apart. 2. On the control day, feeding had a pronounced effect o...
متن کاملIncreased splanchnic blood flow after hypoglycaemia in diabetic and normal man: evidence against glucagon as a mediator.
Superior mesenteric artery blood flow increases significantly after hypoglycaemia in healthy humans. Glucagon has vasoactive properties but its role in hypoglycaemic hyperaemia is unclear. To assess this role, we studied the superior mesenteric artery blood flow response to hypoglycaemia of patients with uncomplicated Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus of at least 10 years duration; a...
متن کاملPresentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall
Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the substitution of the blood pressure changes in the central arteries such as carotid with the blood pressure changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...
متن کاملDoppler analysis of superior mesenteric artery blood flow in preterm infants.
Transcutaneous Doppler ultrasound measurements were made of the superior mesenteric artery of 22 preterm infants (mean birth weight 600-2580 g) to investigate the response of intestinal blood flow to feeding. Analysis of the data in relation to milk intake showed a significant change in peak velocity and mean velocity; peak velocity before feeding increased from a mean baseline value of 34 cm/s...
